Year Invented - 1964
Inventor - Dr. Stanley Donald Stookey and Dr. William Armistead (scientists at Corning Glass works)
Function - Glass lenses that automatically darken (i.e., become sunglasses) in sunlight and clear (i.e., become regular glasses) in low light.
Details - Uses light-sensitive silver halide crystals. In bright sunlight, UV rays trigger these crystals, causing them to separate into silver and halogen atoms, which darken the lens. When indoors or in low-light conditions, the reaction reverses. This process happens automatically and can be repeated thousands of times without degrading the lens.
