Year Invented - 1860
Inventor - Hermann Von Helmholtz (German phycisian and phycisist)
Function - An accessory that bends (i.e., refracts) light before it enters the eyes, helping to align images correctly on the retina, which is accomplished through combining a thicker lower lens (the base) and a thinner upper lens (the apex).
Details - Can be added to single-vision, bifocal, trifocal, or progressive lenses as needed, and often recommended to help reduce double vision or eye strain caused by eye misalignment. Also, the varying lens thicknesses can create visible lines known as "optical inferences" or "refraction patterns."
