Etiology - Amblyopia is caused by developmental eyesight challenges that occur EARLY IN LIFE. It can be a result of strabismus (misaligned eyes) or other similar visual imbalances in the eyes.
Symptoms - Blurry vision in one eye, poor depth perception, wandering eye (drifts inward or outward), frequent eye rubbing, squinting, and overall difficulty with visual tasks.
Details - Amblyopia develops when the brain and eyes are not working together properly. This leads to the brain favoring visual input from one eye over the other, which, if left untreated, can then cause abnormal function and limited vision in the less favored eye
Treatment - The best way to treat amblyopia is to force the brain to use and rely on the weaker eye; however, for best longterm outcomes, it's imperative that such treatment starts early in life (ideally elementary-aged or younger). Common strategies include corrective lenses, patching of the stronger eye, eye drops limiting the stronger eye's dominance, vision therapy, and even surgical procedures.
