Etiology - Blepharitis is caused by swelling around the eyes due to issues such as bacterial overgrowth, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), poor eyelid hygiene (like not removing makeup), allergens, and other various causes/irritants.
Symptoms - Eye discomfort, redness/swelling, crusting of eyelashes, overly watery or dry eyes, and blurry vision.
Details - Oftentimes, the occurrence of blepharitis is multifactorial, since various combinations of its many causes listed above can kickstart or compound swelling around the eye. Additionally, the location of the swelling itself is often traced back to the margins of the eyelids.
Treatment - The first approach treating for blepharitis is often focused around improving eyelid hygiene through the daily implementation of warm compresses or eyelid scrubs. If such hygiene-oriented changes aren't enough then medications like antibiotics or anti-inflammatory eyedrops can be prescribed.
