Etiology - A corneal abrasion occurs when anything scratches or injures the cornea (outermost protective layer of eye).
Symptoms - Sudden eye pain and increased tearing, blurry vision, headache, redness/swelling, and overall eye discomfort.
Details - Corneal abrasions are sudden injuries to the cornea because of inopportune contact or trauma to the eye. Those with dry eyes are at higher risk. Although often minor in nature, corneal abrasions can be very painful.
Treatment - For all corneal abrasions, it's recommended to immediately rinse the injured eye with clean water, avoid rubbing it, and pause use of contacts. Next, depending on the severity of scratch, common treatment steps include pain relievers, antibiotics, lubricating eye drops/ointments, and potentially special care by an ophthalmologist.
