Etiology - Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is rooted in either meibomian gland (produces oil in tears) blockage or disruption, which can be caused by age-related atrophy, age-related hormones, various skin conditions, poor contact hygiene, and other sources of eye inflammation.
Symptoms - General eye discomfort, excessive tearing, dry/crusty eyelids, pain when wearing contacts, and redness/inflammation.
Details - Meibomian gland dysfunction stems from either abnormal or inhibited production of oil from the meibomian glands. Its symptoms can be worsened by dry/windy environments and prolonged screen time. Also, MGD is one of the leading causes of dry eye disorder.
Treatment - MGD is a chronic disease, so consistent care is important. Common treatment strategies include eye drops, at-home warm compresses, anti-inflammatory medications, lifestyle changes (purchase & daily use of a humidifier), and various in-office procedures (like LipiFlow).
