Etiology - Photopsia can be caused by many things ranging from normal aging to a serious neurological disorder.
Symptoms - Brief flashes of light, repetitive flashes of light, shimmering lines, and light flashes alongside floaters.
Details - Photopsia is the false sensation of seeing flashes of light in one's vision. Such imaginary flashes are often described as sparkles, lightening streaks, or flickers of light. If these light flashes are intense and sudden then they should be taken very seriously.
Treatment - At its core, photopsia is more of a symptom than a disease, so identifying and treating its underlying cause is the best treatment approach. Potential underlying causes of photopsia include migraines, eye inflammation, and retinal detachments.
