Etiology - Retinal detachment occurs when the retina (light-sensitive tissue) detaches due to factors such as aging, severe myopia (nearsightedness), trauma, genetics, or prior eye surgery.
Symptoms - Sudden increase of floaters, shadow appears over vision, blurry vision, and flashes of light (photopsia).
Details - Retinal detachment involves the retina detaching from its normal position in the back of the eye. It's a painless, yet urgent condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if not addressed ASAP. Different types of retinal detachment include rhegamatogenous, tractional, and exudative.
Treatment - Due to its extremely serious nature, a retinal detachment requires one of the following medical procedures: laser/cryopexy, pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle, or virectomy.
