Etiology - A stye (hordeolum) is a bump caused by a bacterial infection around the eye due to factors such as a blocked oil gland or poor eye hygeine (not removing makeup or excessive rubbing of eye).
Symptoms - Red bump around eyelid, eyelid crusting, excessive tearing, and increased light sensitivity.
Details - A stye forms when there is a bacterial infection near the edge of the eyelid. It's often red, painful, and it's presence can be attributed either to neglecting proper eye care or because of a chronic condition like meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
Treatment - For a stye, it's usually recommended to first attempt simple at-home strategies like implementation of a daily warm compress, purchase of over the counter pain relief, or a pause in use of eye makeup and contacts. If swelling still persists then medical treatment is recommended.
