First Performed - 1747
Inventor - Jacques Daviel (French ophthalmologist)
Operation - Expanding on the primitive practice of "couching" (pushing natural lens out of view without removal), cataract surgery is the process of removing a clouded natural lens from the eye and replacing it with a clear artificial intraocular lens. It boasts above a 95% success rate, requires a brief recovery (few days to few weeks), and has become the most common surgery in America.
Example of eye before and after cataract surgery.
