Etiology - The most common cause for cataracts is natural aging. In fact, if alive long enough, everyone will develop some level of cataracts. However, other factors, such as excessive drinking/smoking, diabetes, or genetics can play a role in speeding up development.
Symptoms - Blurry/cloudy vision, light sensitivity, poor night vision, double vision, and faded colors.
Details - Cataracts are the most common (and arguably most well-known) eye disease. They occur through the break down and clumping of proteins in the lens of the eye, which is responsible for helping focus light. This protein change decreases the lens' ability to pinpoint light, which ultimately results in cloudy, faded vision.
Treatment - Although temporary solutions like brightening lights when reading or prescribing stronger glasses or contacts can help lessen symptoms, the only permanent treatment is cataract surgery. Performed by a trained ophthalmologist, this surgery is quick, painless, has a short recovery (few days to few weeks), and boasts a 95% success rate.
