Etiology - Blepharitis is caused by swelling around the eyes due to issues such as bacterial overgrowth, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), poor eyelid hygiene (e.g., not removing makeup), allergens, and other various causes/irritants.
Symptoms - Eye discomfort, redness/swelling, crusting of eyelashes, overly watery or dry eyes, and blurry vision.
Details - Oftentimes, blepharitis occurrence is multifactorial, as combinations of its many causes can kickstart or compound eyelid swelling. Additionally, the location of the swelling itself can often traced back to the margins of the eyelids.
Treatment - Initial blepahritis treatment approaches often focus on improving eyelid hygiene through daily implementation of warm compresses or eyelid scrubs. If such hygiene-oriented changes aren't enough then medications like antibiotics or anti-inflammatory eyedrops can be prescribed.
