Etiology - A corneal abrasion occurs when anything scratches or injures the cornea (outermost protective layer of eye).
Symptoms - Sudden eye pain, increased tearing, blurry vision, headache, redness/swelling, and overall eye discomfort.
Details - A corneal abrasion is an injury to the cornea because of inopportune contact or trauma to the eye. Although often only a small scrape, it can be very painful (those with dry eyes are at higher risk).
Treatment - Immediately rinse injured eye with clean water, pause use of contacts, and avoid touching or rubbing. Depending on severity, common next steps include use of pain relievers, antibiotics, lubricating eye drops/ointments, and even a potential visit to an ophthalmologist.
