Etiology - A hordeolum (stye) is a bump around the eye due to a bacterial infection caused by blocked oil glands or poor eye hygiene (e.g., excessive rubbing or not removing makeup).
Symptoms - Red bump around eyelid, excessive tearing, crusting, and increased light sensitivity.
Details - A stye forms when there is a bacterial infection near the edge of the eyelid, forming a bump that is often red and painful. Its occurrence can be attributed to either neglecting proper eye care or chronic eye conditions like Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
Treatment - Initially, at-home strategies like warm compresses, over-the-counter pain medications, or a pause in use of contacts and makeup are recommended. If swelling persists then visiting an optometrist is advised.
