Etiology - Retinal detachment occurs when the retina (light-sensitive tissue) detaches due to factors such as severe myopia (nearsightedness), trauma, aging, genetics, or prior eye surgery.
Symptoms - Sudden increase of floaters, shadow appears over vision, blurry vision, and flashes of light (Photopsia).
Details - Retinal detachment occurs when the retina detaches from its normal position in the back of the eye. It is a painless, yet urgent condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if not immediealty addressed. Different types of retinal detachment include rhegamatogenous, tractional, and exudative (see diagragm for more).
Treatment - Due to its extremely serious nature, a retinal detachment requires an ophthalmologist to perfom one of the following advanced procedures: laser/cryopexy, pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle, or virectomy.
